27 Aug Islington Councillors Drop In on FEL’s Community Repair Session

On Tuesday 25th August, FEL’s FC Designer Collective on Fonthill Road hosted its regular community Repair and Upcycling Workshop, bringing together people with a variety of garments and projects from home, all with the same objective: to keep clothes in circulation for longer.

The workshop is part of an ongoing programme made possible with support from Islington Council, providing local people with the opportunity to develop practical repair and upcycling skills while extending the life of the clothes they already own.

It is a simple idea, but an important one. Rather than seeing a damaged garment as something to discard, participants are encouraged to look at what can be repaired, altered, adapted or given a new lease of life. In doing so, the workshop turns the principles of circular fashion into something tangible and accessible.

The session also welcomed Cllr James Potts and Penny Halliday from Islington Council, who also visited FEL’s FC Designer Workspace on Durham Road. The visit offered the opportunity to visit the Workspace residents, view the training facilities as well as see the community repair session in action.

Cllr James Potts said following the visit: “The work being done here, from repair workshops and upcycling to skills training, shows how fashion can be less harmful to our environment while supporting local jobs and skills.”
