Introducing FCDW Resident: Christine Kendall

New to the FC Designer Workspace is Christine Kendall, a freelance manual pattern cutter that works with a variety of designers alongside developing her own label, The Vintage Fashioner. Christine has just moved in to Studio 2 at the Workspace, here she tells us more about her experience and plans…

About the Christine…

My passion for pattern cutting started at the age of 16 when I was introduced to this magical world of shapes and possibilities. I was captivated by the process of creating a 3 dimensional shape from a flat piece of paper that I had drawn on, measured and cut into, it was, and still is an exciting process.

Striving for perfection in every aspect of my work, I have been fortunate over many years to always find work in the fashion industry either as a designer or pattern cutter. For the past 10 years I have preferred to work freelance as I am self-motivated and enjoy the variety it brings.

Owning my own company is a natural development of being freelance whilst giving me the opportunity to delve deeper into producing my own label.

About the company…

Christine Kendall – Freelance manual pattern cutter

I construct varied first patterns from trousers to gowns with inner corsetry that can have complex construction which is achieved through a creative approach of draping on the stand and technical flat pattern cutting ability.

I work with a variety of designers and couture companies who totally trust that I can bring their vision to life.

The Vintage Fashioner

Embracing a retro aesthetic, The Vintage Fashioner brand was created to represent the elegance and beauty of clothing from the 30’s – 50’s in modern fabrics and sizing.  The intricate cuts and craftsmanship combine to give the collection an air of desirability.

A micro collection of dresses and ensembles form the backbone of the business which is sold through a network of private buyers.  A separate section of the collection is devoted to bridal gowns bringing the romance and utter luxe.

Plans and aspirations

For the freelance pattern-cutting business the plan is to continue building upon the good reputation that I have and continue working with reputable companies.  The aspiration is to grow my list of clients just a little more.

For The Vintage Fashioner label the plan is to develop the collection much more and have a few niche items of clothing per season that sell well.  The aspiration is to build the brand through a targeted media approach which builds customer loyalty bringing a fiscal reward as well as a creative one.

Why you chose the FC Designer Workspace?

Having successfully worked freelance for a variety of designer labels on their premises I realised that I could offer a pattern cutting and toile service to help those companies without the space for a pattern and sample room but with the desire to create a collection.

Having worked from a studio at home over the past few years it became evident to me that I missed the buzz of being connected to others in the industry and needed the physical aspect of going into work.

The Designer Workspace perfectly offers a professional space to establish and grow a fashion business as it has a community of creatives within the space.  Along with machinery that would otherwise be prohibitive (by cost) and appropriate tables for cutting and pattern cutting.

It is also a learning space with tutors and students mixing with professionals bringing a developing and nurturing aspect to the whole vibe.  All of which is amazing.
