20 Feb Free Masterclass On What Is Traceability In Fashion
On Thursday 19th February, FC Designer Workspace residents, students and external participants came together online for an insightful masterclass titled What is Traceability in Fashion, hosted by Fashion-Enter Ltd as part of its popular Free Masterclasses series.
The one-hour Zoom session was led by Caroline Ash, a highly respected manufacturing expert with decades of industry experience. Caroline regularly leads educational and industry groups through seminars and guided tours of the company’s North London factory. Her hands-on knowledge of factory operations, compliance standards and supply chain processes ensured attendees gained practical, real-world insight into what transparency truly looks like in action.

Traceability has become a defining issue in modern fashion. Consumers, retailers and brand partners increasingly expect to know who made their garments, where materials were sourced, and under what conditions products were manufactured. Transparency is no longer a marketing add-on, it is central to trust, credibility and long-term brand value.
Caroline unpacked the concept of traceability by explaining how brands can map each stage of their supply chain, from raw materials and fabric sourcing through to sampling, production and final delivery. She emphasised that genuine transparency requires clear documentation, open communication with suppliers and a willingness to share production stories honestly.

The masterclass was particularly relevant for emerging designers, independent labels and small fashion business owners seeking to strengthen their ethical positioning.
Key takeaways from the session included:
- A clear understanding of what traceability means in practical terms
- How to effectively map and document supply chains
- Best practices for communicating production processes to buyers and customers
- The link between transparency, sustainability and brand differentiation
- Insights drawn from FEL’s own journey as a fully audited UK manufacturer
Caroline also introduced attendees to Galaxius, a digital platform designed to support supply chain transparency, demonstrating how designers can use technology to showcase sourcing decisions, manufacturing processes and sustainability commitments in a structured and credible way.
Throughout the session, Caroline reinforced that traceability is not simply about compliance, it is about storytelling with substance. When brands can confidently explain where and how their garments are made, they build stronger relationships with customers and industry partners alike.
The interactive format allowed attendees to reflect on their own supply chains and consider actionable steps to improve documentation and communication. For many, the session provided both reassurance and motivation to embed transparency into their business foundations from the outset. Participants were invited to interact and ask questions and the feedback from the session was extremely positive.
This masterclass formed part of FEL’s ongoing commitment to supporting fashion entrepreneurs with accessible, industry-led education. The next session in the Free Masterclasses collection, Fashion Brand Foundations: From Concept to Manufacturing, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 10th March 2026.
