CPPD Prevent for Education and FC Designer Workspace Team

On Friday, 26th July, Shauna Warnock, a Prevent Education Officer, delivered a session on Prevent at Fashion-Enter. Prevent is part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy, which prevents people from becoming involved in or supporting terrorism. Haringey and Islington are priority areas with a high number of Prevent referrals. Other North London priority areas are Enfield, Newham, Haringey, Tower Hamlet, and Redbridge. According to the National Referral Statistics, there were 6,817 referrals to Prevent in the year ending 31 March 2023.·

32% (2,203) are between  15-20 years old·

31% (2,119) are under 15

During the session, we covered the following:

  •        What is Prevent
  •        Ideologies such as Islamist Extremism, Right Wing Extremism, Conflicted Ideologies, Incel | Extreme Misogyny | Targeted School/Mass Violence
  •        What is my duty? How to report a concern and make a Prevent referral

We discussed the common ideologies among young adults and the various online platforms and apps, including Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitch, Minecraft, EA Sports, Telegram, and Roblox. These platforms are increasingly accessible for young people to communicate with each other. However, there are potential dangers associated with sharing memes, GIFs, live comments and chats, photos and videos, and direct messaging on these platforms, including sharing inappropriate materials and having inappropriate conversations. We also talked about the online resources available for parents to help children and young people stay safe on the internet, such as:

  • Parent Zone
  • UK Safer Internet Centre
  • Internet matters.org
  • NSPCC
  • Think U Know
  • Childline

It was an informative session with extensive discussions and examples. The team thoroughly enjoyed the session, which was a valuable refresher on Prevent.
Congratulations to all that attended – certificates attached!
