3 Highbury Fields Sixth Formers Gain On-site Work Experience

On Thursday 25th July, Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL) welcomed three students from Highbury Fields Sixth Form for a two-day work experience at the FC Designer Workspace. FEL has been collaborating with Highbury Fields on engagement activities and career talks since early this year, and has offered work experience at FC Designer Workspace to provide insight into the fashion industry. The 3 students had a go at pattern cutting, threading and operating industrial sewing machines, and made simple sewing projects, including a wallet and cushion covers on the last day.

Here the 3 students talk about what they would like to do and gain from the experience…

Rabiya Popal:

“I am a very creative person. I love exploring new media. I would love to express myself in new ways and look forward to being a creative part of a new experience. In the future, I would love to work in the creative industry and even have my own brand, so this is a very meaningful experience.

“By day 2, I have made a purse and 4 pillow cases. I’ve enjoyed these 2 days so much. I love the environment and exploring new media, being creative in new ways. In the future, I would love to be part of this industry, create garments, and spend my time exploring.”

Alaa:

“I’m Alaa, a 17-year-old, and I’m in year 12, and I do art, socialising, health and social care. I am looking forward to gaining live experience, understanding the basics of what fashion production involves, who is part of the team, and fabrics.

“I now know the basics of threading a needle on the sewing machine. I know how to use different types of needles and understand the stitching process. I loved making pillowcases and wallets. I loved the atmosphere. Everyone is so supportive. Your encouragement is what keeps me going and motivated! ”

Keianna Daniel  Clarke:

“I study A-level Art, English Literature, and Health and Social Care. I’m currently focusing on textile-based artwork for my course, focusing on the theme “Inherited Image”. I’m looking forward to learning the ins and outs of textiles and understanding the behind-the-scenes aspects. I want to do this work experience because I’d like a career in the textiles industry, and I hope it will show me what that’s like.”
