October’s Repair and Upcycle Workshop

On Friday 14th October we held our popular and free Repair and Upcycle monthly workshop. Attendees came in with garments from home that for some reason or another were no longer being worn. One of the most common reasons we have found during these workshops is that; ‘the garment didn’t fit well’ or ‘was in need of a repair’. Some attendees have complete upcycling ideas for their garments, requiring advice and support to achieve their vision.

During this session we had one attendee wanting to repair a very damaged coat lining, another wanting to shorten a jacket and one needing to amend the fit of a shirt.

Feedback included:

“At this workshop I wanted to amend the length of a jacket and move the pockets. I tried overlocking and sewing for the first time. The session was great with lots of individual help and attention and a genuine interest in the project. Thank-you.”

“Great workshop. It was very helpful and understandable.”

“I learnt how to recycle a shirt that didn’t look right before but I can now wear it! Great workshop very helpful sewing tutors. Can’t wait for the next session. Very inspirational.”

There were four Islington residents on this seminar with a total of 21 other people attending. In line with Gen Z and a new trend for pre-loved and pre-owned garments upcycling is a growing area of fashion today. This all-day class provides career mentoring, career guidance and access to fabrics, components and zips at the FCDW and free of charge.
