Free Online Masterclass: Fashion Brand Foundations: From Concept to Manufacturing

On Tuesday 10 March, residents and students from the FC Designer Workspace joined external participants for an online masterclass, Fashion Brand Foundations: From Concept to Manufacturing, delivered by industry expert Caroline Trend.

The one-hour session formed part of Fashion-Enter’s / FashionCapital’s free masterclass series and was designed for individuals considering launching a fashion brand, as well as those at the early stages of their brand journey.

During the session, Caroline guided attendees through the full process, beginning with the crucial early research phase. She emphasised the importance of understanding the target customer, defining a clear unique selling point, and positioning a product effectively within the market. For many aspiring founders, these early steps are often overlooked, yet they are essential in ensuring a product idea is commercially viable before moving into development.

Caroline then introduced participants to the design and development stage, explaining how ideas move from concept into tangible products. She discussed the role of technical packs (tech packs) in communicating designs to manufacturers and why clear documentation is vital when preparing garments for sampling and production. The session also covered the fundamentals of fabric sourcing and the different considerations designers must make when selecting materials and suppliers.

Manufacturing was another key focus of the masterclass. Caroline shared insights into how production works, what emerging designers should expect when approaching manufacturers, and some of the common misconceptions people have when starting a fashion brand. By highlighting potential challenges early on, the session aimed to help participants make more informed decisions before committing time and resources to sampling or production.

The masterclass proved to be highly interactive, with participants asking a wide range of questions throughout the session. Topics included how to move a collection into production, the process of developing original fabric designs, and how new designers can best prepare themselves before approaching manufacturers. The lively discussion reflected the strong interest among attendees in gaining practical knowledge about the realities of launching a fashion brand.

Feedback from participants was extremely positive, with many describing the session as “super helpful”, “very informative” and “insightful”. Attendees particularly valued the clear overview of the entire design, sourcing and manufacturing journey, which provided them with a more realistic understanding of what is involved in bringing a fashion idea to life.

The masterclass offered valuable guidance for aspiring designers and entrepreneurs, giving them greater clarity on the steps involved in building a fashion brand and the confidence to begin planning their next stage of development.
