Community Comes Together for Clothing Repair at FC Designer Collective Shop

On Tuesday, 10th June, the FC Designer Collective Shop on Fonthill Road in Islington, London, hosted a vibrant Repair and Upcycle Drop-In Session, bringing residents together to breathe new life into their clothes. The event, supported by Islington Council, is part of an ongoing bi-monthly series aimed at promoting sustainable fashion practices and reducing textile waste through repair and reuse.

Throughout the day, 47 individuals signed up to take part, working on a variety of garments including dresses, trousers, scarves, jackets, and special occasion wear. The drop-in format encouraged participants to bring their own items and try their hand at mending or altering them, with guidance from two highly experienced tutors, Leyla and Lan.

Rather than doing the work for attendees, the tutors supported a hands-on learning approach, offering tips and techniques while empowering individuals to build their own skills. This model not only fosters independence but also helps build a culture of long-term garment care within the community.

Participants praised the session, describing it as “good to excellent,” and unanimously expressed interest in returning for future workshops.

Next Session: Tuesday, 24th June

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, the next free bi-monthly drop-in is scheduled for Tuesday, 24th June. Community members are invited to bring items in need of mending or upcycling and receive expert support in a welcoming, collaborative environment.
