ReFAB Studio x Fashion-Enter Ltd Workshop Inspires New Sewing Skills Through Sustainable Making

On 26th June, FC Designer Workspace hosted the ninth session of the ReFAB Studio x Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL) workshop series, welcoming local residents for another inspiring day of creativity, sustainable making and hands-on learning.

Supported by The Clothworkers’ Company, the free 12-part programme has been designed to encourage sustainable fashion practices while equipping participants with practical sewing and upcycling skills that can be used both personally and professionally.

This latest community workshop focused on creating cushion covers using reclaimed luxury fabrics. Guided by Fashion-Enter Ltd’s experienced tutors, participants learned a range of professional sewing techniques while transforming high-quality surplus textiles into beautiful, functional home accessories. Many attendees also had the opportunity to make cosmetic bags and tote bags, giving new life to materials that might otherwise have gone to waste.

The session attracted nine participants, with beginners and more experienced makers learning together in a welcoming and supportive environment. For some, it was their very first experience using a sewing machine.

One participant, who had never sewn before, amazed herself by completing four cushion covers during the session.

“Lovely experience, well explained, will come again.”

Throughout the workshop, attendees developed valuable technical skills, including understanding sewing machine tension for different fabrics, testing materials before stitching, pattern placement, fabric layering and overlocking techniques.

Participants shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about their experience:

“I learnt about cushion cover design, tension of the sewing machine for different fabrics, to test fabric first. Layering and piecing pattern pieces together being mindful of designs and overlocking.”

“Really enjoyed it, will definitely come back.”

“I have learnt how to make a cushion cover and a wallet.”

“It was an awesome session. I have never made anything before. The trainer was very professional and helpful, explaining everything in detail for me to understand.”

“It was therapeutic and relaxing. I have never learned to sew before due to working at a young age. I would love to attend your workshops to learn more about sewing.”

The ReFAB x Fashion-Enter Ltd workshop series continues to demonstrate how creative skills, sustainability and community can come together to build confidence and inspire lifelong learning.
