27 May Community Repair and Upcycling Sessions Continued Success at FC Designer Collective
The latest repair and upcycling drop-in session at the FC Designer Collective shop on Fonthill Road, North London, has once again demonstrated the growing community appetite for sustainable fashion initiatives.
Supported by Islington Council, the bi-monthly sessions encourage local residents to repair, alter and creatively upcycle unworn garments rather than discard them, helping to reduce textile waste while developing practical sewing skills and creative confidence.

Held on 26th May, the session welcomed nine participants, many of whom brought along multiple garments to work on throughout the day. Projects included alterations, repairs and upcycling across a range of clothing items including T-shirts, skirts, dresses and trousers.
The relaxed and supportive environment allowed participants to share ideas, learn new techniques and breathe new life into pieces that may otherwise have remained unworn.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with all participants rating the session as “excellent.” Many expressed enthusiasm for attending future workshops, with several requesting that sessions take place more frequently, including one participant who suggested weekly workshops due to the high value and enjoyment of the experience.

Most attendees discovered the event through Eventbrite, while others attended after receiving direct email communications, highlighting the growing awareness and popularity of the initiative within the community.
Importantly, every participant said they would like to return for another repair and upcycling session, reinforcing the importance of accessible community-led sustainability projects that combine creativity, learning and environmental responsibility.

The repair and upcycle drop in workshops form part of a wider movement promoting circular fashion and conscious consumer habits, encouraging people to rethink how clothing is valued, worn and reused. By empowering individuals with practical repair skills, the sessions not only extend the life of garments but also foster a stronger connection between communities and sustainable fashion practices.
The next session will take place 9th June, places are free but registration is required tap here for more information.
