Work Experience Spotlight: Fearne Gains Hands-On Industry Insight

At Fashion-Enter Ltd, nurturing the next generation of fashion talent is a core part of the mission and recently, Fearne completed an inspiring four-day work experience placement across both FEL’s Haringey factory and the FC Designer Workspace.

From the cutting table to design discussions, Fearne immersed herself in the realities of garment production and creative development, gaining practical skills and valuable industry insight along the way.

A key highlight of the placement was learning to operate industrial machinery. Fearne was introduced to the industrial sewing machine and overlocker, equipment that plays a crucial role in professional garment construction.

“Throughout my past 4 days of work experience at Fashion-Enter, I have enjoyed myself, learning how to use an industrial sewing machine, pattern cutting, checking measurements, and sitting in on design meetings,” she shared.

Working with industrial machines gave her the confidence to experiment with tougher fabrics and more complex techniques. Unlike domestic machines, industrial equipment is faster, more powerful and designed for precision, an exciting step up that allowed Fearne to push her skills further.

Beyond technical training, Fearne also gained insight into the creative and strategic side of fashion. Sitting in on design meetings offered a behind-the-scenes look at how collections are developed from initial ideas through to final garment construction.

She reflected on how eye-opening this experience was: “It gave me an insight into how difficult but interesting it is to create a garment, or a clothing line. Also learning how different designers have different ways of approaching their stuff, and that it isn’t actually as easy as you think.”

Observing different creative processes highlighted the individuality within the industry, demonstrating that while every designer works differently, each must balance creativity with practicality, fit and production considerations.

Fearne also spent time shadowing team members, including Niki, whose ability to contribute ideas while pattern cutting left a lasting impression. “Shadowing Niki made me very inspired as she comes up with ideas for the designer as well as pattern cutting, to boost the design/garment to its full potential.” This collaborative approach, where technical expertise enhances creative vision, showed Fearne how design and production work hand in hand.

Looking ahead, Fearne is considering focusing on design or styling, both of which she found fascinating during her placement. The experience has clearly broadened her understanding of the industry and strengthened her confidence in exploring a future within fashion.

Work experience placements like Fearne’s are an important part of Fashion-Enter Ltd’s commitment to education and skills development. By providing hands-on exposure to real manufacturing environments and designer workspaces, students gain authentic insight into the dedication, teamwork and technical ability required to succeed in fashion.

We wish Fearne every success as she continues to explore her creative path.
