Another Successful Repair & Upcycling Session at FC Designer Collective

Creativity and sustainability were in full swing on Tuesday 24th February as ten participants attended the latest Repair and Upcycling Drop-In at the FC Designer Collective shop on Fonthill Road.

Held bi-monthly and supported by Islington Council, the sessions are designed to empower the local community to repair, rethink and refresh their garments – helping to keep clothing and textiles in circulation for longer. The initiative reflects a growing movement towards conscious consumption, encouraging practical skills that reduce waste while strengthening community connections.

During the session tutors Leyla and Manuela were on-hand to support and advise. Attendees brought along a wide range of well-loved pieces in need of attention. Dresses, tops, trousers, knitwear and even a bag were carefully repaired and revived. Whether tackling loose seams, replacing fastenings, reinforcing worn areas or offering general mending advice, the drop-in provided hands-on guidance in a welcoming and supportive setting.

The session received positive feedback from participants. One attendee shared: “Manuela was so friendly and helpful.” Another described it simply as: “A really great event.”

The relaxed, informal format allows people of all skill levels to feel comfortable from complete beginners looking to learn basic stitching techniques to more experienced makers seeking advice on more complex repairs.

By extending the life of existing garments, the Repair and Upcycling Drop-In aligns with broader sustainability goals, reducing textile waste, lowering carbon impact and promoting a circular fashion mindset. Rather than discarding damaged items, participants leave equipped with the confidence and knowledge to mend and maintain their wardrobes.

The sessions also highlight the importance of community-led solutions. With the backing of Islington Council, the initiative demonstrates how local partnerships can drive meaningful environmental change at grassroots level.

The next free Repair and Upcycling Drop-In will take place earlier in the month to coincide with Repair Week, on Tuesday 3rd March. Those interested are encouraged to sign up in advance to secure their place. Spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended.
