20 Nov November’s Textile Upcycling and Repair Workshop at The FC Designer collective

On the 14th of November 2023, FashionCapital/Fashion-Enter hosted another free upcycling workshop at the FC Designer Collective retail unit on Fonthill Road in Finsbury Park. The workshop, supported by Islington Council, is aimed at people who have garments, or any form of textiles that they would like to repair or change into something new by teaching basic techniques as well as use the on-site equipment.

At the workshop the team demonstrates step-by-step how to make changes and repairs. For example, mending a pair of ripped jeans, removing sleeves from a top, or just learning how to sew on a button.

The day started at 10am and finished at 5pm. On arrival Jasmin set up the space with sewing equipment needed for the workshop such as; needles, thread, trims and scissors. Senior technician, Leyla also helped with setting up the sewing machines so that they were ready to use when people arrived. Leyla also advised those who need to use the sewing machines for their project to practice first, as some had never used industrial machines before. Once they were comfortable using the machines they were then more confident sewing their upcycling projects.

We had 8 Islington residents attend the workshop and they were all beginners, this was a good amount of people as it allowed everyone to get the attention and help they needed to complete their projects. 

The projects brought in varied from making a shirt shorter to creating a top out of a dress, repairing ripped jeans and adding buttons onto garments. Overall the participants really enjoyed the workshop  and a lot of them said they would sign up for the next one. Jasmin also advised them on the other sewing and pattern cutting classes we have on offer where they can gain further skills.
