Working With the Local Islington Community

In August 2022 we undertook a free 3-day seminar in curtain making in collaboration with Public Works Group. This community led project saw the participants work through the entire process from; fully understanding the brief, working in small teams, measuring up, choosing the right fabric, designing and creating samples.

At the end of the 3-days the final designs were displayed with the aim of selecting a winning team to be commissioned to make the curtains for a new community space.

We are now delighted to confirm that we are moving to the next stage of this innovative project and Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL) has secured a contract with Tom Dobson, Program Manager to now make curtains for the space at the new West Library.

Recently, FEL CEO Jenny Holloway and assistant Vasilica Daineanu visited the newly furnished West Library in Islington and reviewed the entries. There were four shortlisted groups that created a range of different curtains.

During the course the learners reviewed a host of different curtain types that included:

  1. Single panel curtains
  2. Panel pair curtains
  3. Pinch pleat curtains
  4. Box pleat curtains
  5. Goblet pleat curtains
  6. Pencil pleat curtains
  7. Grommet curtains
  8. Rod pocket curtains
  9. Tab Top curtains
  10. Tie top curtains
  11. Blackout curtains
  12. Window sill curtains
  13. Apron curtains
  14. Cafe curtains

The winning design however was the traditional box pleat curtains which were created by our very own ex-Fashion Technology Academy pattern student Mamello Atisa: “I am delighted that Public Works Group chose my box pleat curtain design as the winning curtains for the new West Library. I have been learning with Fashion-Enter for the last year and I was also invited as a guest panel speaker for the Skills and Education Group awarding body recently. I just love stitching. I have continued to perfect my skills and I can’t wait now to start the curtain project. Thank-you for giving me this opportunity!”

What a fantastic opportunity for local residents, we can’t wait to provide further support and see the finished curtains in place.

When we held the original curtain making course in the summer the whole idea was to find employment for a lucky winner and support on business and career mentoring.  As a result of this initiative one lucky winner now has receipt of £200 for making the curtains and has kicked started her career in bespoke stitching working as a freelance machinist.
