16–18 Year Old Creative Practice Taster Session

On Friday 20th February, the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) welcomed aspiring young creatives to its Islington campus (FC Designer Workspace) for a free sewing workshop designed especially for 16–18 year olds.

The session introduced learners to the UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice, launching in September 2026, and provided a valuable opportunity to experience the course environment first-hand.

The taster session was built around practical learning. Students worked on industrial sewing machines, developed essential stitching techniques and constructed a simple wallet to take home, giving them both a tangible outcome and a real sense of achievement.

For many attendees, using industrial machinery was a highlight. These professional machines offer a step up from domestic sewing equipment, helping students understand the technical standards required in further education and industry settings.

Alongside the practical workshop, tutors provided guidance on progression routes and reviewed portfolios, offering tailored advice on how to strengthen creative development ahead of September 2026 applications.

The UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice is designed to equip young people with the technical skills, creative confidence and industry knowledge needed for progression into higher education or employment within the fashion and creative sectors.

The February taster session saw a strong turnout and received fantastic feedback from prospective learners, many of whom left feeling inspired and more confident about pursuing a future in fashion.

Following the success of the February taster, the Academy will be hosting additional free taster sessions in April and May. These sessions offer another opportunity for 16–18 year olds to experience the course structure, meet tutors and gain hands-on insight into what studying Creative Practice at the FTA involves.

For young creatives considering their next steps after GCSEs or further study, attending a taster session is a valuable way to explore options, build confidence and see where a passion for fashion could lead.
